SARONNO – “The image of the devastation of Piazzale Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto captures the sense of disorientation caused by the tremendous disaster suffered by our city due to the repeated, violent weather events that have hit us. The uncontrollable force of a nature in revolt spared nothing and no one; the cost of the material damage will be very high, with an unimaginable trail of inconvenience, destruction, and disfigurement.”
These are the words of the President of the City Council, Pierluigi Gilli, commenting on what happened on the night between Saturday and Sunday, when a tornado hit Saronno once again, accompanied by rain and wind.
This is a demonstration of our fragility, as in other times with regard to plagues, earthquakes, and scourges that have scratched humanity, most recently Covid. In addition to this, there remains a more subtle and burdensome consequence: a recurring sense of fear that makes us anxiously watch the sudden changes in the sky.
Trees planted almost 100 years ago, as a remembrance, as they used to say, of our Fallen, have been torn from the ground like twigs, stealing a piece of memory and beautiful greenery. The alarm has also sounded for us: we cannot remain indifferent to the comatose state of nature; a decisive change of habits is needed, one that becomes virtuous; we need to take responsibility for the current preservation of the environment. From bewilderment, astonishment, fear, and suffering of these days, we move on to the awareness that we must change. Let’s get to work. All together. No one is an island.
