SARONNO – “It hurts to know that the State can make agreements with the defendants and disregard the requests of the victims! This is Italy!” This is the immediate comment from Teodoro Garruto, the brother of Michele Garruto, the 30-year-old barber who lived in Solaro with a business in Rovellasca, who died on July 7, 2022, in Saronno along the small ring road that connects the city of amaretti biscuits to Ceriano Laghetto.
The accident left several communities speechless and shocked. Michele Garruto was riding his motorcycle back home along the SP31 bis, the outer ring road that connects Saronno with Rovello Porro and Ceriano Laghetto. Shortly after 1 pm, there was a collision between the motorcycle of the 30-year-old and a work vehicle with a basket. The incident has been widely discussed not only because Michele Garruto was much loved and known for the excellent results he achieved in his professional activity, but also because his body remained on the asphalt for several hours before it was determined which jurisdiction the case fell under. Not surprisingly, the brother has repeatedly called for justice for Michele. Not surprisingly, the family of the 30-year-old, determined to obtain justice, is supported by the Aifvs Association of Family Members and Victims of the Road. On the first anniversary of the young man’s death, last July, a successful solidarity memorial was organized by his brother.
Today, the preliminary hearing against the driver of the vehicle, who, according to the findings, made a U-turn on the provincial road at a point with a double continuous line, becoming an unavoidable obstacle for the motorcycle driven by the 30-year-old, is taking place.
The hearing ended with a plea bargain and a sentence of one year and four months in prison and a two-year suspension of the driver’s license. The family members are deeply bitter: “It’s as if he killed my mother. We opposed the plea bargain with the lawyer from the Aifvs association, but the judge accepted the plea bargain. They even granted a suspension of the sentence. It’s as if they killed Michele a second time.”
