San Paolo d’Argon. “Nothing could have foreseen what happened, nothing,” Angelo Rota repeats shaking his head. “I had seen my brother Diego and his wife Caryl together at Christmas and on Epiphany. She had sent a text message to my wife the night before the incident. It seemed like everything was going well.” In his words, and in his gaze, incredulity and dismay are enclosed. “But not anger – he wants to clarify -. Despite everything, I can’t feel it towards Caryl.”
The body of his brother Diego, 55 years old, a carpenter like him, is laid out in the funeral home ‘La Pace’ in San Paolo d’Argon, where in these hours it is possible to show support to the family while waiting for the funeral, scheduled for Friday, February 2nd at 10 am in the parish of Brusaporto, where Rota lived before moving to Martinengo.

Last Thursday, in the villa on Via Cascina Lombarda, the man was attacked and killed by his wife Caryl Menghetti with about twenty stab wounds, as determined by the autopsy. That morning, the woman had been taken to the hospital in Treviglio by her husband, who was experiencing hallucinations and delusional phrases, some of which were directed towards him (she feared that the man could harm their 5-year-old daughter, a groundless fear according to the carabinieri, who did not find any traces of violence or abuse in the victim’s past). The 46-year-old woman was discharged with the indication to follow a pharmacological therapy, and a few hours later the crime was committed. “If Caryl’s conditions were underestimated? I don’t know,” comments Angelo Rota. The family has turned to a lawyer. “I do not exclude that the judiciary will order investigations in this regard, but at the moment we do not have answers for what happened – concludes the brother -. Our thoughts are now focused on Diego and Caryl’s daughter. We must think first of all about her.”
