Cantù, via Dante closed. Residents: “Unable to leave, we didn’t know anything”.

Strong dissatisfaction this morning, Tuesday, July 18, 2023, among the residents of Via Dante. The road that connects the central Garibaldi square with Pianella will remain closed for almost a month, until after Ferragosto, for the resurfacing of the road and the creation of a small square in front of the Argenti park.
However, this morning the residents were surprised to find themselves unable to leave their homes.
“No notice of the road closure was given in the street by the Public Works Department of the Municipality,” explained Claudio Molteni, who has an office in a building in Via Dante. “This morning it was open and someone was able to leave; then I heard the construction work and realized that it was no longer possible to leave. You can’t do this kind of work.”

Enrico Citterio echoed his words. “I went to the local police station, but apparently they didn’t know the start date of the work from the ordinance,” he explained. “For these first works, they could have closed half of the street based on the progress of the work and allowed passage. This way it is not even possible to use Via Tommaso Grossi because there are tables.”

Indeed, there are no signs hanging on the street indicating the road closure, only those indicating no parking in the parking spaces.
Manuela Maspero, owner of the Libooks bookstore, also confirms some communication problems between the Public Administration and the traders. “We didn’t actually receive any proper communication about the closure, but unfortunately this is a practice that the Administrations have consolidated over time. I believe that some notices along the street a few days in advance or even just a municipal employee passing by to report the closures could be a simple but more effective solution,” she commented. “As traders, we will suffer the inconvenience of not being able to receive suppliers and some customers who cannot arrive by car may be unhappy, but I understand that the work needs to be done.”
